Wanting to book the perfect location for the occasion of Peter Keech's 60th birthday, I looked into several well renowned hotels. The old Rectory was recommended by a neighbour who had booked rooms and held a celebration there.

I wanted a sophisticated extremely well catered and flexible venue with exquisite rooms to reach the exacting standards of my invited guests. On an inspection visit I was immediately impressed as I entered the period building.

The owners sat down with me and went through all of my varied and demanding arrangements including a very specific personally tailored menu, the accommodation of a religious service, with an as yet unconfirmed number of guests.

The combination of homely, personal and highly organised and professional service resulted in what I can only describe as an absolutely perfect celebration that will live on in the memories of those who attended. I would also like to mention that every dish prepared, from the canapés in the garden, through to the evening meal’s deserts were as good as the top-class restaurants I often eat in. Each unique bedroom was grand and elegant. The old Rectory comes with my highest recommendation for its ambiance, service, food, and accommodation.

In May of this year, the whole of the Pimm family had a re-union at The Old Rectory, Sutton-on-Derwent – all thirty two of us! Sutton was my Grandfather Reverend Pimm’s vicarage home for some twenty two years, a very happy home to our relatives and a special place still to us all. During our stay this year, with ages ranging from three to seventy, with all the comings and goings, and a grand celebratory meal, Bob and Angela looked after us splendidly, treated us almost as honoured guests – our accommodation was most comfortable, the food was excellent, indeed we could not have had finer hosts.

Grandad and Grandma Pimm would have been delighted by it all.

“The Old Rectory was a warm and welcoming place to stay. The rooms were all bright and cheerful and it was lovely to also be able to have a sitting area to socialise in during the day. The buffet supper provided on the Friday evening was just fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed by all. It was an ideal place for family and friends to meet and catch up for a relaxing weekend together.”

John and I decided to have our wedding reception at the Old Rectory in Sutton-on-Derwent , near York . We are a middle age couple who were having a traditional Church wedding, but wanted a less formal reception. We tentatively made enquiries and were thrilled that Angela and her team agreed to manage our reception.

We wanted the day to be very informal yet organised. The venue was therefore perfect, a real home from home feel to it with many grand and traditional features that reflect the architectural history of the building.

There were 58 guests in all, and we had the use of 3 large rooms downstairs. The service and food were fantastic; we cannot thank Angela, Judith and the team at The Old Rectory enough for their professionalism and hospitality.

We had planned to utilise the beautiful outdoor areas that the Rectory boasts, but unfortunately the weather was inclement, and a change of plan was soon executed.

I think my lasting memory of the occasion will be the way that the management at the Old Rectory somehow left us to enjoy the house, it almost felt that we were the owners and were the hosts to our own guests. The staff team was always in the background to attend to everyone’s needs, yet unobtrusive.

Some of our guests stayed in the Hotel for the weekend of the wedding, and enjoyed the high standards of the rooms and quality breakfasts, as well as its ideal location for visiting the City of York.

The Old Rectory, Sutton-on-Derwent (7 miles from York) is an outstanding example of a British Country House hotel. The location is in a small scenic village, well placed for regional attractions like Castle Howard - the Brideshead Revisited historic location.
The Old Rectory is the ideal size for a country hotel and has a substantial garden. The owners have extensively renovated the 19th Century property and have installed very high quality fittings in all the guest rooms. Overall, the Old Rectory offers a delightful experience and can be enthusiastically recommended to anyone seeking a country get-away.

My family had a wonderful time when we stayed at The Old Rectory in July whilst
attending my daughter's wedding at a venue nearby. You really made us feel
very welcome and the rooms were all very spacious and beautifully furnished.
The meal you provided for my group of 17 on the Friday evening was delicious
and it was also very nice to be able to sit outside in the garden after our
meal. The setting was perfect.

I stayed for three nights in a beautifully renovated room overlooking the front lawn.

The decor is simple and refined, the food excellent and the furnishings comfortable. The rooms are spacious with the high ceilings typical of houses of this age. I especially appreciated the bed, being six foot three and suffering with a bad back I have a dread of hotel beds which are usually very uncomfortable - not this one!

The hotel stands in spacious and pleasant grounds, with lots of mature trees and you can sit outside for an evening drink, weather allowing! There is also recognition of the needs of the 21st century traveller with a flat screen TV in each room and easily accessed (and fast) wireless computer networking.

The hotel is near to Elvington airfield so it’s very handy if you are visiting the aviation museum or going there for one of the motoring events. The new hotel owners are ‘old car friendly’ so if you have an unusual or veteran car you will be sure of an extra special welcome.
If you want a quiet stay in pleasant surroundings with good but unobtrusive service and near to York then I can highly recommend The Old Rectory.
